This sculpture depicts the Nyingma deity Dorje Drolo (Tib. rdo-rje gro-lod). He is one of the eight manifestations of Padmasambhava, the famous Indian yogi and Tantric master, who visited Tibet in the eighth century. According to a legend Padmasambhava assumed this wrathful manifestation when he flew through the air on a tigress’ back to teach Buddhism in Bhutan.

Dorje Drolo is an important yidam in the Nyingma tradition. A prayer describes him as follows: "With wrathful demeanour, Great Bliss flaming in potent might, purple-black in colour, brandishing Dorje and Phurbu, with both feet dancing on top of a tigress"
